It is an estimate. Withholding is an advance on your income tax (IRS); the final tax is settled in the annual return. Mainland Portugal tables in force since 1 January 2026 (Despacho n.º 233-A/2026, de 6 de janeiro).

On 17 September 2026 the Government approved a cut in IRS rates which, if Parliament passes it, should reach the withholding tables in November. When the new tables are published, this calculator will be updated.

Questions

About net salary in Portugal

How is net salary worked out in Portugal?

From your gross salary, 11% goes to Social Security and your employer withholds income tax (IRS), which depends on the amount, your family situation and your number of dependants. Then the meal allowance is added (the tax-free part pays nothing) and, if you are paid that way, the monthly share of the holiday and Christmas allowances.

What are the holiday and Christmas allowances?

In Portugal most employees get 14 payments a year: 12 monthly salaries plus a holiday allowance (subsídio de férias) and a Christmas allowance (subsídio de Natal), each worth about one month. Some employers pay them in two lump sums, others spread them over the 12 months (duodécimos). The yearly total is the same.

What is withholding tax?

It is an advance on your income tax that your employer deducts every month and pays to the State. The real tax is settled in the annual return: if too much was withheld, you get a refund; if too little, you pay the difference. So this is an estimate of what reaches your account each month, not of your final tax for the year.

Does the minimum wage pay income tax?

In 2026, no: the withholding tables exempt salaries up to 920 euros, which is the minimum wage. The 11% for Social Security is still deducted.

Is the meal allowance taxed?

Only the part above the daily limit. In 2026 the limit is 6.15 euros a day paid in cash and 10.455 euros a day paid on a meal card or voucher. Anything above that counts for IRS and Social Security as if it were salary.

Does it work for the Azores and Madeira?

Not yet. The autonomous regions have their own, lower withholding tables. This calculator uses the mainland ones.

What is not included?

Overtime, bonuses, night work, the IRS Jovem regime for young workers, the regime for new residents, dependants with disabilities and special Social Security schemes. If any of these apply to you, the real amount will be different.

Is what I type stored?

No. The calculation happens in your browser and your salary is not sent anywhere. Only if you press "Share this calculation" do the values go into the link you choose to send.
